Canada joins the US and asks Mexico for consultations on the importation of GMOs

A spokesman for the Canadian Ministry of Commerce had no immediate comment, nor did a spokeswoman for the Mexican Ministry of Economy.

Mexico plans to regulate genetically modified corn for human consumption, which US officials say puts some $5 billion in corn exports to its southern neighbor at risk and could impede biotech innovation.

The Mexican government has previously indicated that Washington’s disagreement with its measures is politically motivated.

However, Canada is not a major exporter of corn and Ottawa is generally concerned about Mexico imposing arbitrary bans on biotech-produced agriculture, Bloomberg reported.

It is also concerned about the Mexican government’s lack of respect for the North American trade pact (T-MEC), according to the report.
