The UN demands the "immediate" cessation of violence in the West Bank, "alarmed" by the raid in Jenin

March 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN has been “alarmed” by the effects of the operation launched on Monday in Jenin by the Israeli forces, which ended with six Palestinians dead, and has called on all parties to stop “immediately” the current escalation of violence.

The UN coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, has stressed in a statement that it is time for “containment”, in such a way that “provocative actions” or any type of statement that encourages violence must be avoided. .

“The parties must refrain from taking new steps that lead to more violence,” he said in the note, in which, in addition to expressing his concern over the incidents in Jenin, he called for an end to attacks by Palestinians against Israelis and also assaults carried out by settlers.

Wennesland has also pointed out that Israel, as the “occupying power”, has a duty to guarantee the protection of the civilian population and those who commit abuses are held accountable.

ATTACKS ON MEDICAL FACILITIES

The Jenin raid also affected medical facilities and equipment, theoretically protected by international law. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has denounced the launching of a tear gas grenade against one of its structures, as well as shots at a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance.

The coordinator of MSF projects in Jenin, Carolina López, has proclaimed in a statement that “the attacks against ambulances and health structures are completely unacceptable” and has described as “alarming” the “spiral of violence” in which the West Bank lives.
