US authorities reported deploying another 25 Border Patrol agents to a section of the northeastern border bordering the Canadian province of Quebec in response to a spike in illegal crossings.
“While the number of people apprehended is small compared to other regions with irregular migration flows, the arrests in the Swanton sector represent a dramatic change in this area,” a Customs and Protection spokesperson said in a statement. United States Border Patrol (CBP).
The team began its work Monday and aims to help deter and hinder human smuggling activities in the sector, which includes the border areas of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and parts of upstate New York.
last february the death of a mexican who had just entered Vermont from Canada illegally highlighted the spike in illegal crossings along the border between Quebec and parts of New England, according to authorities.
CBP figures show that agents in the sector made 1,513 arrests of people who crossed illegally between October 1, 2022 and January 31, 2023, an increase compared to the 160 apprehensions registered in the same period of the previous year.
