Samsung seeks to resist 300,000 folds with the water drop hinge in its new folding phones

samsung is testing the screens of its next range of foldables, expected to be called the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5, which will debut with a water drop-shaped hinge and are expected to withstand up to 300,000 folds.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Fold4 phones are made with a hinge U-shapedwhich presents a small gap in the fold that does not completely join both ends of the screen.

The members of the next generation of folding from the South Korean manufacturer, on the other hand, will debut with a new hinge, which will have a teardrop-shaped design, also known as a drop of water. Thanks to this, the panel shows a more concealed and less visible fold than current mobiles, which put more pressure on the screen.

Some manufacturers such as Honor and OPPO already have this water drop design in their latest releases, honor vs. and Find N2, respectively, that have recently arrived in Spain. Both also have a resistance of up to 400,000 certified folds, that is, an average of 100 folds a day for a decade.

At the moment, Samsung has not managed to reach the limit of folds that competing companies do present, since it is currently carrying out resistance tests that reduce to 200,000 the number of certified folds.

As explained The ElecSamsung Electronic is developing a foldable phone with the aim of reduce its thickness to 14 mm or less and has begun to test it with an initial limit of 200,000 folds, the same as the current range of folding models already have.

Once this first phase has passed, which lasts about four or five days, the device is expected to maintain at least 85 percent of its original resistance. Since then, reliability tests will continue to be implemented on foldable devices to reach a limit of 300,000 folds over the next month.
