“The Last of Us”: showrunner explains why they included a reference to the second game in chapter 6

No doubt “The Last of Us” has become the series of the moment. Video game fans and new viewers are looking forward to the premiere of new chapters on the HBO Max platform. Currently, there are six in the app, which are really extensive and full of emotion.

If you have finished the first video game, you will have noticed all the references and scenes traced in the series. However, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have taken the liberty of adding some extra details to complement the series.

For example, we saw in previous chapters the passage of Bill and Frank from their point of view and not from Joel and Ellie’s visit. In Chapter 6, an element referencing the next video game (and possible second season) was introduced.

Craig Mazin, the showrunner of the series, explained why they added this element to the series, despite the fact that the first season only focuses on the events of the PS3 and PS4 game. Despite the fact that Mazin began working on this project before The Last of Us Part 2 was released, he was already aware of some of the best scenes: “Ellie’s fascination with being an astronaut and traveling to space”.

“We had this opportunity that Neil didn’t get in the first game. now we know more. It was an opportunity to teach how joel knew ellie. She asks him if he knows who is your favorite astronaut and he knows it. Instinctively, he is already in her head and knows her, and she is not surprised ”, commented the manager.

Let’s remember that in the second game, the two protagonists go through a museum, where Ellie learns more about trips to the moon and humanity’s space exploration. She even manages to enter a ship and the sounds of the trip through the air are simulated.
