Turkey raises the death toll from the February 6 earthquakes to more than 44,200

The Turkish authorities have raised this Friday to more than 44,200 the death toll from the February 6 earthquakes in the southern province of Kahramanmaras, located near the border with Syria, a country where around 5,900 people have also died.

Specifically, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has specified in the latest assessment that a total of 44,218 people have lost their lives due to the earthquakes in eleven provinces, among which Kahramanmaras and Hatay stand out, the most affected.

In this way, the total number of deaths from the earthquakes amounts to more than 50,000 with the balance of Syria, although the number of victims in the Arab country is much more difficult to calculate, especially in the northwest, in the hands of rebel groups.

Despite the fact that the figures increase every day, the total death toll in Syria exceeds 5,900 — with more than 11,000 wounded –, according to official data that has not been updated since February 12, a few days after the earthquakes.
