The investigation, which is part of a Fondecyt Initiation project, seeks to compare levels of thinking in 300 students of History, Geography and Social Sciences.
Diagnosing and comparing the levels of development of historical thought evidenced in the historical narrative about the social outbreak is the main objective of the Fondecyt Initiation project called “Evaluation of the historical thought of future teachers of basic and secondary education through the construction of historical narratives about the social outbreak” (folio 11230035).
The research, which is led by the academic from the Faculty of Education, Dr. Humberto Álvarez, will work with a sample of 300 young people who are students of Pedagogy in Basic Education or Pedagogy of Secondary Education in History, Geography and Social Sciences. in a public, traditional-private or private university in the country; and take a history subject and its didactics that are taught in the last three semesters of the degree.
The work will be carried out through a qualitative tool, of an exploratory and interpretative nature, and its objective is to diagnose and compare, based on the constructed narratives, the development of the historical thought of the participants. Its design is non-experimental, since the data will be collected between April 2023 and July 2024.
“The potential impact and scientific novelty of the project lie in the urgency of working on the proposed theme due to its progressive academic and social interest, since most of the research is focused on addressing the historical thought of primary and secondary education students through through the construction of narratives, and not in the evaluation of this meta-concept in the teachers of the specialty in initial training”, explained Dr. Álvarez.
Improve the teacher training process
The exploration period will run from March 2023 to the same month of 2026. Regarding the process, the UCSC professor commented that it will be a path of many academic challenges, but it will generate an important contribution to a field of study that requires more attention. from researchers to improve the quality of teacher training for teachers of Pedagogy in Basic Education and Pedagogy of Secondary Education in History, Geography and Social Sciences.
“I am sure that the study will show that future teachers have an unbalanced historical education, so the need to constantly improve teacher training processes will become visible,” said the Doctor in Society and Culture.
It should be noted that the results of this project will be disseminated mainly through the scientific articles and presentations that are included in the work plan. This will help trainers of history teachers who wish to acquire new knowledge on the subject matter, through the application of the narrative protocol in similar educational contexts, to diagnose the levels of mastery of historical thought of their students and, from Based on these results, undertake pedagogical actions that contribute to improving the training quality of future teachers of the specialty.
