It is clear that Spotify does not want to be just another music streaming service. The Swedish company has been making its way to other forms of content distribution, such as podcasts, investing millions in signing creators for its exclusives, and audiobooks. The next step? Integrate a game within your app.
Spotify has announced the purchase of Heardle for a price that has not been publicly disclosed. It is an English project based on the popular wordle game (acquired earlier this year by The New York Times), albeit with a slightly different mechanism. Instead of guessing words, users must guess songs.
Heardle is already part of Spotify
The company has not taken a second to start adapting its new acquisition to its brand. to domain heardle.apphas joined spotify.com/heardle. Also, as expected, instead of using the Soundcloud platform to access songs, the app now uses the Spotify content library.
The game is still free, but it introduces some limitations. It is currently only available in a few countries. United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealandthough Spotify says it intends to expand availability to “hundreds of millions more people around the world.”
The Swedish company assures that more than a game, Heardle is a “musical discovery tool” that allows us to discover new artists or remember those that we had forgotten. In this sense, as part of its strategy plan to integrate the game and other interactive experiences into your app “at a later date”.
This movement leaves some questions in the air. What does Spotify mean when it talks about “other interactive experiences”? Thinking of including other games? At the moment, the firm has not provided details on this, but it is clear that it is still looking for alternatives to retain its audience and prevent them from migrating to other services.
The arrival of other games, should that ever happen, shouldn’t surprise us. After months of rumours, the streaming giant Netflix announced its foray into the world of mobile video games and in less than a year he assembled a catalog with almost twenty titles and confirmed that he was working to reach 50 in 2022. Are we close to seeing a multiplatform entertainment proposal from Spotify? In time we will know.
How to play Heardle
Until Heardle is integrated into the Spotify application (and after that too) you will be able to play from its website. If you don’t live in one of the supported countries, you’ll need to use a VPN. Once you enter spotify.com/heardle You will see the instructions in English. tap Play to close that window and then on the play button that appears at the bottom of the window.
Your task will be to guess the song with its opening notes, so you will immediately hear the first few seconds of a track. If you know the answer you can enter it in the search box, if you don’t know it you can press the button skip. As a last resort, you will have the opportunity to listen to the song in its entiretywhether you guessed it right or not, and share the result with your friends.
