A group of protesters in Israel tied themselves up this Wednesday at the house of the Economy Minister, Nir Barkat, in protest of the judicial reform proposed by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, which passed the first of the three readings necessary for its ratification last Monday despite massive demonstrations across the country.
Several protesters have blocked the street and four people have tied themselves to a post in front of the house of the minister, who will take part in a vote on key issues of the ruling coalition in the Knesset on Wednesday afternoon, including the most controversial point of the controversial judicial reform.
The Police have arrested the four involved, who have been released shortly after and have stated that their intention with the protest was to remind the minister that “history will judge those who remained silent and voted for a coup that destroyed democracy , separated the nation and destroyed the economy”, according to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
Barakt, who was mayor of Jerusalem between 2008 and 2018, met last week with businessmen from the country who have expressed concern about the economic consequences that the reform could bring.
Last Monday, other groups of protesters blocked the houses of other Likud members, trying to prevent the first vote on the rule, which would give the Netanyahu government full control over the appointment of judges, including those of the Supreme Court, and It would greatly limit the court’s ability to strike down legislation that violates the Constitution, while allowing Parliament to amend laws that it manages to strike down with a simple majority of 61 out of 120 MPs.
