Bus accident with migrants in Mexico leaves 17 dead

Clothes, junk and debris at the scene of the bus accident in Panama

At least 17 people died Sunday in a bus accident in Mexico involving migrants from Venezuela, Colombia and Central America, Puebla state authorities said.

The state interior minister, Julio Huerta, told reporters on Monday that 45 people were traveling in the vehicle. The accident occurred on a state highway as the bus was traveling northbound.

“Fifteen people lost their lives at the time of the accident” and two later in a hospital where 15 victims were admitted, Huerta explained at a press conference. Five of them were in critical condition.

The official did not specify how many of the dead and injured were migrants, and Mexico’s migration institute had not responded to a request for comment.

The Mexican press reported that the bus had an accident when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Images published by the Milenio television station showed twisted fragments.

Last week, dozens of migrants perished in Panama in a similar accident when the bus they were traveling in plunged down a ravine.
