Anti-judicial reform protesters attempt to enter Israel's Parliament

20 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A group of demonstrators have tried to overcome the barricades erected by the security forces around the Knesset or Israeli Parliament coinciding with the start of the parliamentary process of the controversial judicial reform promoted by the Government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The police have already repelled the assault attempt. The incident occurred coinciding with the scheduled start time of the debate on the proposal backed by the ultra-conservative government, reports the Israeli public television KAN.

Meanwhile, inside the Chamber, the Parliament security service has forcibly expelled the protesters who were in the guest gallery to which they had accessed without permission and where they had begun to hit the glass that separates that area from the plenary session. the Knesset.

Thousands of demonstrators – between 40,000 and 60,000 according to the latest estimates – have gathered this Monday in front of the Knesset to protest against a judicial reform that, according to opposition leaders, means “the death of democracy in Israel”.

Critics of the reform have argued that it is an attack on Israel’s balance of power, as it gives Parliament unusual leverage to overturn judicial decisions. This Monday is the first of the three readings necessary for the law to be amended.
