The United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and countries of the European Union, such as Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom or Germany, have reiterated their support for Ukraine before the process opened in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Russia for alleged genocide in the country in the context of the Russian invasion.
“We take note of the public statement of July 1, 2022, according to which Ukraine announced that it had submitted its memorial to the Court. We welcome, once again, Ukraine’s efforts to ensure that international law is respected,” they stressed. in a joint statement.
Other signatory countries that support kyiv, and that indicate that Russia “must be held accountable for its actions”, are Greece, Malta, Iceland, Ireland, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Cyprus, Albania, Bulgaria or Moldova. , among others.
“We consider that the violations of international law by Russia engage its international responsibility, and that the losses and damages suffered by Ukraine as a result of (such violations) by Russia require full and urgent reparation,” they stressed.
In this sense, the signatory countries have highlighted, in their joint statement, that the objective of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide is “to safeguard the very existence of certain human groups and confirm and endorse the most elementary principles of the moral”.
“It is in the interest of all States parties to the Genocide Convention, and more broadly of the international community as a whole, that the Convention is not misused or abused. That is why the signatories of this declaration that are Parties in the Genocide Convention intend to intervene in this process”, they explained.
Finally, they have highlighted the importance of sharing with the Court “their interpretations of some of its essential provisions” in light of the “serious questions raised in this case.”
