July 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Israel’s ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, presented his credentials to Polish President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday, days after the two countries agreed to end their diplomatic disputes and strengthen ties.
“We agreed with the president (of Israel), Isaac Herzog, that it was time to return to normal relations. First step taken,” said Duda through his official account on the social network Twitter.
“(Israeli) Ambassador Yacov Livne has presented his credentials today. President Herzog has asked me to restore the Polish ambassador to Israel. I hope that happens soon,” added the Polish president.
In response, Herzog thanked Duda and noted that this is “an important first step in advancing relations between Israel and Poland.” “I hope to receive soon the credentials of the new Polish ambassador in Israel”, he has riveted him.
Duda and Herzog agreed in early July to improve bilateral relations, including the return of their respective ambassadors to their posts, after their ties deteriorated after Warsaw passed a law last year limiting the ability of Jews to recover their properties during World War II.
The Polish Parliament approved in July 2021 a law that prevented any restitution of assets seized by the Nazis from their heirs, a measure that the Foreign Minister and current Prime Minister of Israel, Yair Lapid, called “anti-Semitic” and “immoral”. “.
Poland argued that in no way is it a norm applicable only to Jews and the country’s Constitution understands it as a necessity to harmonize Polish legislation and, in the future, initiate the process of restitution that Israel so much desires.
