The French manager Ardian, the Danish investor Copenhagen Infraestructure Partners (CIP), the world’s largest specialized in greenfield renewable infrastructure, and the Swedish investment fund EQT, are three of the largest European investors in renewables in Spain to advance in the transition energetic.
The Government has pledged to turn the country into a low carbon economy by 2050. A objective that is estimated to require investments of more than 8 billion euros in renewable energy sources in the next 30 years.
For this reason, the Government is determined to turn Spain into a first-rate producer of green energy and an attractive destination for investors. In fact, the Bloomberg Climatescope places Spain as the fourth best destination in the world for investors in renewables, only surpassed by Denmark, the Netherlands and Lithuania.
It is estimated that between 2017 and 2021 alone, investment in renewable energy in our country has multiplied exponentially, reaching 32,000 million euros.. But it’s not just about wind, solar or hydroelectric power. As recently recognized by the Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, Spain also seeks to play a predominant role in the production of hydrogen green, for which close to 8,900 million euros will be invested until 2030.

National energy companies have accelerated their investments and projects in renewables in recent years. But Spain is also a very attractive country for large European investors in renewables, who are making a solid contribution to promoting the energy transition in our country with megaprojects in different parts of the geography that cover different types of green energy.
The private equity investment company Ardian created the company AGR-AM in 2021 to operate in Spainwhose renewable assets have an operating portfolio of 760 MW in our country alone, of which 283MW are photovoltaic and it also has plans to invest in new technologies such as green hydrogen.

A European investor that is redoubling its commitment to Spain is the Danish Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), with one of the most important portfolios of renewable energy projects in the sector, above 6.5 GW in development, mainly wind and solar. Owner of the Monegros wind farm in operation with 487MW, it will shortly begin construction of its second wind megaproject in Teruel that would add more than 800 additional MW.
But CIP’s biggest bet in Spain is green hydrogen and it is already working, in a consortium with companies such as Enagás Renovable and Fertiberia, on the installation of 500 MW of electrolysers in Aragón, expandable to 2 GW in a second phase for the production of green hydrogen. that will contribute to the decarbonization, among other areas, of the Spanish Levante. The Danish investor, which has an office in Madrid, will invest more than 8,000 million euros in this project and has recently closed the installation of two biogas plants in Lleida, an eastern sector in which it expects to grow significantly.
For his part, the Swedish investment fund EQT acquired the Spanish company Solarpack in December 2021, a company specializing in photovoltaic solar projects that is accelerating the construction of solar plants in Spain where it has already commissioned 304.5 MW in twelve different locations. It also recently announced the acquisition of the Solaer business, also specialized in the construction and operation of photovoltaic solar plants.
