( Spanish) — The National Water Commission of Mexico (Conagua) announced this Tuesday on its Twitter account that it has declared the beginning of a state of “emergency due to severe, extreme or exceptional drought.”
The official announcement was published in the Official Journal of the Federationwhere it is detailed that the measure is assumed after the strong droughts in various basins of the country.
The declaration empowers Conagua to dictate measures to guarantee water supply in the most affected areas.
In addition, the commission reported that industrial and agricultural areas may voluntarily provide third parties with partial or total use of water concessions.
In the most recent drought monitoring report of June 30, it can be seen that northern Mexico is the area most impacted by droughts, which includes the states of Nuevo León, Baja California and Baja California Sur, in addition to the southern state of Warrior.
