A mob kills a man accused of blasphemy and in police custody in east-central Pakistan

11 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A man accused of blasphemy in Pakistan has died at the hands of a mob despite being in police custody in an incident that has so far also resulted in the suspension of two police officers from Punjab province, in the center. East of the country.

Hundreds of people ended up forcibly seizing the police station where the defendant was located, in Nankana Sahib, while the officers fled from the wrath of the protesters.

The general inspector of the Police of the province, Usman Anwar, has confirmed to the newspaper ‘Dawn’ the suspension of two senior officers of the police station — the superintendent Nawaz Waraq and the duty officer Feroz Bhatti — for breaching their duty in another one more incident that involves the so-called “religious vigilantes” who exalt the population to attack alleged blasphemers.
