Ministers for Women will examine the actions planned for the implementation of the Buenos Aires Commitment and will discuss the autonomy of women and gender equality in the digital age

Ministers for Women and high authorities of the mechanisms for the advancement of women in the region will meet virtually on February 8 and 9, 2023 to examine the actions planned for the implementation of the Buenos Aires Commitmentapproved in the XV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean that took place in Argentina from November 7 to 11, 2022.

During the meeting, the special regional consultation session will be held prior to the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on the Legal and Social Status of Women (CSW), whose priority theme will be ” Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.

The 64th Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women is organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), as the Secretariat of the Conference, in coordination with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). Currently, the Government of Argentina, through the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity of Argentina, chairs the Board of Directors of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The meeting will be opened on Wednesday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Chile (GMT-3) by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; María-Noel Vaeza, Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean of UN Women; Ayelén Mazzina, Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity of Argentina; and María del Carmen Squeff, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations and Vice-Chairperson of the Bureau of the 67th session of the Commission on the Legal and Social Status of Women (CSW67) designated by the Group of States of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Within the framework of the special regional consultation session prior to CSW67, the reference document will be presented Gender equality and the autonomy of women and girls in the digital age: contributions of education and digital transformation in Latin America and the Caribbeanprepared by ECLAC, UN Women and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), by Ana Güezmes, Director of ECLAC’s Division for Gender Affairs, and Cecilia Alemany, Deputy Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean of UN-Women and ai Representative in Argentina.

The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, a subsidiary body of ECLAC, is the main intergovernmental forum on women’s rights and gender equality in the region.

In November 2022, within the framework of the XV Regional Conference, the countries of the region committed to moving towards a new style of development: the care society.

The representatives at the meeting recognized “care as a right of people to care, to be cared for and to exercise self-care based on the principles of equality, universality and social and gender co-responsibility and, therefore, as a responsibility that must be shared by people from all sectors of society, families, communities, companies and the State”.
