The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, this Sunday night offered the Chilean authorities the support of his country with the aim of dealing with the fires that have already burned around 270,000 hectares in the Latin American country.
“The Chilean people can count on the support of France to fight against this calamity,” Macron said in a message on his profile on the social network Twitter in which he lamented that “tragic fires ravage various regions of Chile.”
Likewise, the French president has transferred his “thoughts” to the families of the victims and to the “heroes who fight against the flames.”
The Chilean authorities have confirmed the death of more than twenty people from this wave of fires and have warned that the situation will continue to be complex in the coming days. According to official figures, some 800 homes have been destroyed in recent days.
Neighboring countries such as Colombia have announced the sending of material and troops to alleviate “the climate crisis that is burning Chile”, while a contingent from the UME sent by Spain has already arrived to collaborate in the extinction work.
The European Commission has also offered the help of the European Union to combat the wave of forest fires. “We are closely following the devastating and numerous fires,” said the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic.
