In January the prices of vegetable oils, dairy products and sugar fell
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Food Price Index (FAO) fell by 0.8% in January compared to December and almost 18% in relation to the maximum reached in March 2022.
The decrease was due to the decline in prices of vegetable oils, dairy products and sugarwhile those of cereals and meat remained practically stable.
Global costs for palm and soybean oils fell on weak global import demand, while those for sunflower and rapeseed oils fell on ample export reserves.
Butter and milk powder prices trended lower on weaker demand from major importers and increased supplies from New Zealand.
Bumper sugar crops in Thailand and favorable weather conditions in Brazil offset the impact on prices due to lower crop yields in India and higher gasoline prices in Brazil, which support ethanol demand, as well as the appreciation of the Brazilian real against the US dollar.
They ask to end the “illogical” escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights urged Israel and Palestine this Friday not to return to the failed approaches to violence that failed in the past and to abandon “the illogical escalation that has only generated corpses, shattered lives and utter despair.”
Volker noted that 2022 saw a record number of Palestinian deaths in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the highest number of Israeli fatalities seen in many years, both inside Israel and in the occupied West Bank.
Türk recalled that collective punishment measures, such as punitive forced evictions and home demolitions, are expressly prohibited under international humanitarian law and that the Israeli government’s plans to expedite and expand firearms licensing “can only lead to more violence and bloodshed”.
Instead of fueling an ever-increasing spiral of violence, he urged all people in public office or other positions of authority – indeed, everyone – to abandon the language that incites hatred towards “the other“.
“Such hate speech is corrosive to all Israelis, Palestinians and society as a whole,” he said.
The World Health Organization launched this Friday a new roadmap on breast cancer. The Global Initiative seeks to achieve the goal of saving 2.5 million lives affected by the disease by the year 2040.
There are more than 2.3 million cases of breast cancer each year, making it the most common type of cancer among adults. In 95% of countries, this disease is the first or second cause of female cancer death.
However, survival rates are very uneven between and within countries; nearly 80% of deaths from breast and cervical cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries.
The guide was presented on the eve of the World Cancer Day campaign, which is celebrated every February 4, and recommends applying three pillars:
- early detection
- early diagnosis
- comprehensive treatment
