The 7.1 million units that PS5 managed to sell during the last quarter of 2022 compared to 3.9 million a year ago, which is an 84% year-on-year increase. So far this fiscal year PS5 has managed to place 12.8 million consoles, which compares to the 9.5 million units sold during the same period of the previous year. In this case we are facing a year-on-year increase of 35%. Sony expects to close the last quarter of the current fiscal year that ends on March 31 by distributing 6.2 million PS5s and reaching the annual goal of 19 million, one million more than previously expected.
If Sony meets its target, PlayStation 5 will have managed to sell 38.3 million units in ten quarters, a figure slightly below the 40 million that PlayStation 4 managed to ship during the same period of time. Unlike PS5, PS4 did not face a pandemic or major supply problems due to lack of chips. The best fiscal year of PS4 in terms of sales was the fourth and that is the same one that PS5 will start next April.
As for software, during the last quarter of 2022 between PS4 and PS5 they sold 86.5 million games, a year-on-year drop of 7%, of which 20.8 million were first partyalmost twice as much as a year ago.
