Czech Republic ends border controls with Slovakia

2 Feb. () –

The Czech Republic will finish its border controls with Slovakia next Sunday, February 5, with what it was trying to deal with migration from that country, according to what the Czech authorities have reported.

“As of February 5, the permanent controls on the border with Slovakia that the government introduced due to the increase in illegal immigration on September 29 of last year will end,” read a statement released on the social network Twitter by the Ministry. of the Interior of the Czech Republic.

However, as the country’s Executive has detailed, police officers will not disappear from the borders and will continue to carry out random daily checks at border crossings.

The decision comes after the Czech authorities have noted a decrease in the number of migrants entering the country. The number of arrests has fallen since September from dozens of migrants a day to just a few, according to ‘Ceske Noviny’.

During this time, Slovakia has criticized the decision of the Government of the Czech Republic, reiterating that immigration must be addressed while protecting the external borders of the Schengen area, taking timely measures at the transactional level or harmonizing the visa policy of countries outside the European Union. .
