The United States and South Korea carried out joint air exercises on Wednesday over the waters of the Yellow Sea, located between the Korean peninsula and China, the first of its kind since the beginning of the year.
A B-1B bomber, as well as F-22 and F-35B stealth fighters from the United States Air Force and South Korean F-35A aircraft.
“The combined air drills show the United States’ willingness and ability to provide a strong and credible extended deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats,” the ministry said in a statement collected by the Yonhap news agency.
The US ambassador to South Korea, Philip Goldberg, this Wednesday asked the South Korean government to trust Washington’s “containment capacity” in the face of the threat posed by North Korea to the region.
The defense ministers of the United States and South Korea, Lloyd Austin and Lee Jong Sup, met yesterday to address the situation in the region. The talks came as the countries try to bolster their containment capabilities as Pyongyang develops its ballistic and nuclear program.
