German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated in an interview that he will speak soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to which the Kremlin has responded that no calls between the two leaders are planned on the Russian leader’s agenda.
“In recent months I have spoken with Putin over and over again, just as President (French, Emmanuel) Macron has done. The last time at the beginning of December. And I will be on the phone with Putin again because we need to talk,” he said. affirmed Scholz in an interview with the newspaper ‘Tagesspiegel’.
“The tone of our telephone conversations is not rude, but it is clear that our opinions are completely different (…). But one thing is also clear: as long as Russia continues with the war and with this aggression, the current situation does not change ( …). Putin wants to forcibly annex parts of his neighboring country and that is absolutely unacceptable,” the German chancellor stressed.
In response, the Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, stressed that at the moment there is no conversation with Scholz on Putin’s agenda, although he has also indicated that the Russian leader “is open to contacts.”
“So far there have been no agreed telephone conversations. Putin remains open to contacts,” Peskov said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. Peskov has thus explained that Moscow has not received any request from Berlin to have a telephone conversation.
