The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has described as “abominable” the terrorist attack perpetrated this Friday by a Palestinian armed man against a synagogue in East Jerusalem, which has killed at least seven people.
“It is particularly abominable that the attack occurred in a place of worship and on the same day that we commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. There is never an excuse for acts of terrorism. They must be clearly condemned and rejected by all,” he said in a statement. a statement from the secretary’s spokesperson.
In this sense, he has expressed “his deepest condolences” to the families of the victims while saying he is “deeply concerned” about the escalation of violence in the region. “This is the time to exercise maximum restraint,” he added.
The armed attack occurred in the vicinity of a synagogue in Neve Yaakov, in East Jerusalem. The Palestinian man has fired from a car at a building used as a Jewish temple, killing at least seven people and wounding several more.
After that, the suspect, a resident of East Jerusalem, fled to the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina, where he was neutralized by Israeli Police officers while trying to flee the place on foot.
