The victims of Nazism will be commemorated this Friday throughout Germany, which will hold a commemorative act in the German Parliament in which the Holocaust survivor Rozette Kats will participate, as reported by DPA.
The President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas, will open the special event at 10:00 am, which will also be attended by the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This year’s commemoration focuses on people who were persecuted by the Nazis because of their sexual orientation or identity.
On January 27, 1945, soldiers of the Red Army of the Soviet Union liberated the survivors of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in occupied Poland. The Nazis had murdered more than a million people there, most of them Jews.
Since 1996, this date has been commemorated in Germany as Holocaust Remembrance Day, with the placement of wreaths in many parts of the country.
Kats will deliver a memorial speech at the Bundestag, followed by Klaus Schirdewahn, also a Holocaust survivor, who will address lawmakers as a representative of the LGBTQ community.
