The Conservative Party sets the rules for choosing Boris Johnson's successor

July 11 () –

The Conservative Party has made public this Monday the regulations and the calendar that will culminate on September 5 with the election of Boris Johnson’s successor as ‘Tory’ leader and consequently as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“The nominations open and close tomorrow. We will have the first vote on Wednesday and there is likely to be a second vote on Thursday,” Graham Brady said after a meeting of the conservative parliamentary group, known as the 1922 Committee.

In addition, Brady has explained that each contender must have 20 signatures of support among the conservative deputies in what is the first milestone of a race that seeks to leave only two candidates to lead the formation before the final vote.

Graham has indicated that the objective is to achieve a “balance” between a “reasonable speed” of the process before the summer break and “an adequate debate within the party”.

As for Johnson’s continuity in office, Graham has clarified that it is not his responsibility. “We are assuming our functions as quickly as we can within the logic”, he has riveted.
