Why were there no games that needed 2 GamePads on Wii U? Reggie answers it

The Wii U had a really complicated life cycle because those responsible couldn’t explain everything it offered. However, it is thanks to that console that fans took advantage of several Nintendo gems. One of the most circulated questions about the hardware was why you could never play with 2 GamePads, which Reggie has just answered.

As you will surely remember, the predecessor of the Switch allowed for the first time 5 gamers to play at the same time in local mode, this allowing one of them to play with the GamePad and the other 4 with a Wii Remote.

However, throughout the life of the Wii U it was never possible to play with 2 GamePads, a situation that generated doubts in the community as they did not understand Nintendo’s decision, so that question was asked to the former president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, who finally confessed the reason:

“Well, what was interesting is that with Wii U, there was a complete development plan for all the interesting interactions and all the capabilities that the system could do, and in that case, could multiple GamePads technically communicate with one Wii U? The answer is yes, but the installed base (of consoles) was never big enough for that type of implementation to make sense, “said the businessman in an interview with MinnMax.

In addition to this, Reggie said that, although there were plans to use 2 GamePads in a game, the short life of the Wii U did not allow them:

“And most importantly, the company didn’t make a game where you needed another GamePad to have a great experience, development just never continued and the Wii U’s lifespan ended up being so short it just never happened.”

As you can see, it seems that the lack of popularity of the console and its short life cycle were decisive for Nintendo to rule out any implementation of a second GamePad in a game.

Sadly for Nintendo fans, the Wii U was not as successful as expected and now it seems that the company has learned from its mistakes to achieve the good results of the Switch.
