The Israeli Army has opened an investigation into the death last week of a Palestinian after being shot by soldiers at a checkpoint in the West Bank as a result of the preliminary investigation into the event, which suggests that the soldiers could have opened fire. no need.
The incident took place on January 17 around the town of Siluad, when a mobile checkpoint caused a traffic jam that led to protests from several drivers, prompting a soldier to throw a flashbang grenade.
After that, Ahmad Kahla tried to get out of his vehicle to protest, but the commander present in the area prevented him from doing so and used pepper spray on him. After that, several soldiers removed the man from the vehicle, which led to a brawl in which Kahla reportedly drew a weapon.
According to the preliminary investigation, at that moment an Israeli soldier opened fire on the man, hitting him in the upper part of the body. The event took place in the presence of the victim’s 19-year-old son, who was also in the vehicle, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
Although Kahla was identified as a terrorist planning to carry out an attack, the brigade commander overseeing the preliminary investigation has determined that this was not the case, stressing that “the incident should not have ended with one man killed”. .
For this reason, the Israeli Army has specified that the Military Police has opened an investigation and has added that the conclusions will be delivered to the Military Prosecutor’s Office, as reported by the Israeli public broadcaster, Kan.
The Palestinian Authority branded the event an “execution” amid a rise in tensions in the area. The United Nations warned last week that “the dangerous cycle of violence” between Israelis and Palestinians is causing a “devastating” number of deaths and stressed that “the violence must end.”
