The United States has decided to expand the training practices shared by the US National Guard and the Taiwanese Army, sources close to the decision have confirmed to Nikkei Asia.
This decision follows the success of these programs in the war in Ukraine, where elements of the US National Guard are helping Ukrainian forces repel a Russian invasion.
Under the agreements between the US and Taiwan, the National Guard has training powers since approximately May of last year.
Without specifically pronouncing on this expansion, Pentagon sources assure the commitment to Taiwan “is solid as a rock and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and within the region in the face of the threat from China.”
“National Guard training would likely focus on improving Taiwan’s ability to harness its reserve forces to greater effect in support of a whole-of-society military mobilization plan,” according to the same sources, in statements to Nikkei Asia collected in turn by the ‘Taipei Times’.
