Iran believes that the designation of the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist is due to the "desperation" of the EU

Jan. 20 () –

The president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, has condemned this Friday the decision of the European Parliament to designate the Revolutionary Guard of Iran as a terrorist organization, assuring that the measure is due to the “desperation” of the Europeans.

“This measure arises out of desperation and comes after their failed attempts in the streets to deal a blow to the Iranian people,” Raisi said, referring to the demonstrations that began in September 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, according to reports. picked up by the Mehr agency.

According to Raisi, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is an “official force” and part of the Iranian Armed Forces, so the decision of the European Parliament would contravene International Law and the UN Charter.

The statements take place two days after the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it described the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group for alleged violations of Human Rights during the recent riots in the country.

The measure was approved on Wednesday by almost the entire Eurochamber with 598 votes in favour, 31 abstentions and nine votes against.

Also, during the day on Thursday, the European Parliament demanded that the European Union harden its position on Iran and increase sanctions against those responsible for the internal repression against the demonstrations, including the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and the president, Ebrahim Raisi. .

For parliamentarians, the spiral of violence unleashed by the Iranian regime and its military assistance to Russia in the midst of a war of aggression against Ukraine should harden the EU’s position with respect to Tehran.

This situation “requires further adjustments in the EU’s position towards Iran,” said the resolution approved on Thursday by the European Parliament in a vote by show of hands.
