The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will meet on February 10 in Washington with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, reported the communications department of the Brazilian presidential palace.
In December, Biden invited Lula to visit the White House. The leftist leader, who assumed the presidency on January 1, will travel to the US capital on February 9 and plans to leave two days later.
A little over a month ago, the United States national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, met with Lula in Brasilia for almost two hours and they talked about strengthening democracy in the Americas, the fight against climate change and the situation in Haiti and Venezuela.
Lula said on social media that Sullivan extended an invitation from Biden to visit the White House.
Last month, Lula himself had said that the meeting with Biden could take place after December 12, when he will receive the “diploma” of president-elect from the Superior Electoral Tribunal.
The meeting in Washington will become the first international trip of the leftist leader. It should be noted that the visit occurs at a conjunctural moment in Brazil, where there have been strong protests by the followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is in the US.
