Jacinda Ardern announced her decision at a press conference and will continue to serve until February 7.
The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, resigns from her position, as announced this Thursday at a press conference in the city of Napier, where the Labor Party caucus is being held.
“I am human. Politicians are human. We give everything we can for as long as we can, and then the time comes. And for me the time has come,” said Ardern, taking the opportunity to share a message for her partner, Clarke Gayford, to whom he said: “Let’s get married once and for all.”
Ardern, 42, will continue to serve as prime minister until February 7. She steps down after five years of service, in which she became the youngest leader in the nation.
