The thrill of the hunt comes to next-gen consoles with quality tweaks that promise to improve an already good experience. If you missed the launch of Monster Hunter Rise in March 2021 and you want to try it on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, this is a good time to embark on an adventure full of danger and excitement. We are before him Monster Hunter most agile of the franchise and I assure you that you will enjoy it from start to finish. As it is an improved version, I decided to focus on the new features offered by the new generation version.

The first thing you should know is that this is the original version of Monster Hunter Risetherefore it does not include the expansion sunbreak. According to Capcom, this update will be sold separately and will arrive in the spring of 2022. Although this is bad news, this version has all the free content that comes as DLC available until before the arrival of the expansion. For this reason we find monsters like Teostra, Valstrax and some Apex versions in the event missions. You will also find weapons and armor in collaboration with other franchises and lots of content to keep us busy for hours.
Now let’s move on to the improvements implemented in the new generation versions that we must anticipate, perfect the gaming experience beyond simple aesthetic details. For this review I played the version for PlayStation 5 and the first thing that jumps out is the improvements in the visual section with two modes to choose from. The first focused on performance and the other on quality. In both versions, the performance is excellent and everything feels very fluid without interruptions. Seeing the game running at 60 frames per second is what was needed and what a difference in the hunts; You will feel more agile than usual as you jump through the air at full speed. You will also notice this while exploring aboard your canyne comrade. We know that your priority is to fulfill your mission but give yourself some time to appreciate the life of each ecosystem. The only thing I noticed is that the special cinematics, like when the felynes prepare the food or the monsters’ presentation are kept at 30 frames per second like in the original version.
The other addition is the image quality and it is that, in addition to reaching the 4K format, we can see that the textures and lighting have improved a lot. You will notice it since you create your character but it is more evident when you see monsters with more realistic fur, the reflections of the water, and the more defined shadows when you see the light passing through the leaves. In the options menu you can activate other settings such as HDR, the movement of the vegetation, the behavior of light with ambient occlusion. This is reflected in better effects of fire, lightning, explosions and especially in textures of the characters and environments with more detail and volume.
Even though I put a few hundred hours into the original version, it’s very nice to be able to experience this great adventure once again. The sad part is that when dealing with other platforms, there is no way to transfer our game, so the option is to start from 0. There is also no cross-play between platforms, but between consoles of the same family. The only advantage is that the loading times are much shorter and you will save a lot of time between missions. At first glance it seems like an insignificant change but in the long run it reduces the wait to concentrate fully on the action. This allowed us to reach High Rank in less than 20 hours to continue the hunt for our dream weapon and armor from the previous patch.
“As it is about other platforms, there is no way to transfer our game, so the option is to start from 0”
Regarding changes to the game system or additional improvements, there are only a couple of options that take advantage of some features in the DualSense, in the case of PlayStation. The first thing is the adaptive trigger that we use to shoot and can be used with all firearms. The same goes for the haptics, though I only noticed it on the designated fire trigger. For example, with the heavy crossbow I felt a good use because we can fire a projectile or the charged shot. But if we use special ammunition the trigger will start to vibrate. They are minor changes that do not make a difference but offer an extra. The same goes for the motion sensor, which allows you to control the camera. We think this feature is cumbersome but if for some reason you want to use it, you can.
The last issue to consider is the audio, which is important as it helps us locate ourselves in the middle of the battle but also offers incredible themes that accompany us on every hunt. This version is compatible with 3D Audio, when activated we will be able to perceive a sensation of immersion depending on the device we use. In my experience, I liked the sensation since it allows you to hear the noise of the environment with a different intensity than usual. The roars are louder and the music is louder but also the ambient noise feels more natural than before. It can be different for each player but if you have headphones or audio equipment compatible with this option it is worth activating it.
“It is clear to me that the improvements are substantial and perfect the experience in every way”
With all these improvements, can I say that it is the best option to play Monster Hunter Rise? Yes, at least on consoles. The new generation version allows you to adjust the game in a very similar way to the PC version with very good quality and above all very good performance. It’s worth playing if you didn’t have a chance to try the original version but also if you’re a veteran player. Although it is the same game from a couple of years ago and it is a pity that it does not include the content of sunbreakit is clear to me that the improvements are substantial and perfect the experience in every way.
Monster Hunter Rise it will also receive a version for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, in addition, it will arrive at the Xbox Game Pass service from the day of launch.
