Meaza Ashenafi, the Chief Justice of the Ethiopian Supreme Court, as well as her vice president, Solomon Areda, have sent a letter of resignation to the House of Representatives of their “own will” after serving five years in their respective positions.
Shortly after, the Ethiopian House of Representatives has approved with a majority of votes his replacements, Professor Tewodros Mihret Kebede as president and Judge Abeba Embiale as vice president. In addition, the candidates have taken an oath before the members of the Ethiopian Assembly.
The resigned vice president of the Supreme Court has recently been appointed part-time judge of the United Nations Dispute Court for the period 2023-2030, as reported by the newspaper ‘Addis Standard’.
For her part, Ashenafi became the first woman to be appointed Supreme Court president in 2018 and worked as an adviser on women’s rights issues at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, based in Addis Ababa.
