The trial of Sayfullo Saipov, the Uzbek terrorist who killed eight people in Manhattan on October 31, 2017, began this week. No death sentence has been handed down in New York since 1951, but US courts could make an exception in Their case.
Uzbek terrorist Sayfullo Saipov was 29 years old when he intentionally ran over cyclists and pedestrians in a bicycle lane in lower Manhattan in New York in 2017, leaving a trail of death and terror in his wake. Eight people were killed in the attack and several were injured and amputated.
After five long years, the trial against him has just concluded its first week. The Prosecutor’s Office aims to achieve the death penalty for the terrorist while his public defender requests life imprisonment.
Among the victims were five Argentines – part of a group of 10 friends who were celebrating 30 years after their high school graduation, two North Americans and one Belgian. Relatives and survivors testified in court before Judge Vernon Broderick and also saw Saipov face to face for the first time.
Death penalty?
If Saipov is found guilty of all 28 charges against him, then it will be up to the 12-person jury to decide whether he receives the death penalty or spend the rest of his days in prison. The US Attorney General himself, Merrick Garland, has come out in favor of the death penalty.
Saipov expressed no remorse and assured that the killings were to avenge the death of Muslims as dictated by the Islamic State group.
The trial could last until March.
