Video games suffer inflation; mobile gaming fell 5% in 2022

These figures are relevant, since for a few years now the video game vertical for smartphones has been one of the most profitable in the entire gaming industry and it is also where some of the main acquisitions have taken place.

At the beginning of last year, for example, Take-Two bought the mobile game company, Zynga, for 12.7 billion dollars, while in 2016 Activision Blizzard acquired King, responsible for Candy Crush, for 5.9 billion dollars. Dollars.

The video game industry would collapse in 2022

On the other hand, Newzoo reported that console games would also experience a 4.2% decrease in user spending, something that would contribute to a decrease in global revenue for the video game market, which would generate 184.4 billion dollars, that is. that is, a decrease of 4.3%, according to estimates.

Tom Wijman, principal analyst at the consultancy, said 2022 was a “corrective year after two years of lockdown-driven market growth” in which revenue was higher than anticipated.

And although 2022 was a year of profit cuts, 2023 has already started badly for some companies in the sector, such as Ubisoft, which announced the cancellation of three titles unknown to the public but already in development due to the “worsening macroeconomic conditions” that are affecting the video game industry.

In addition, the French studio said that some of its top ranked titles, such as Just Dance 2023 and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, have underperformed in terms of sales.
