International forum at ECLAC headquarters in Chile discusses how to improve migration statistics

Data on international migration are essential to support evidence-based policies and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Developmentthe Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and other global agreements. However, basic data on the population, flow and characteristics of international migrants, as well as on the causes and effects of international migration, remain scarce or are not used to their full potential in many countries.

The Third International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS 2023) will bring together producers and users of migration statistics from national and international statistical offices, other government agencies, international organizations, academia, civil society and the private sector to discuss ways of improve the collection, analysis and use of migration data around the world. The aim of IFMS 2023 is to fill the existing gaps in migration data and better inform public policy making. The Forum will contribute to making public discourse and policy-making on migration more informed and evidence-based.

IFMS 2023 is organized by the Divisions of Statistics Y Population of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Forum will take place at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) headquarters in Santiago, Chile, from January 24 to 26, 2023, and will be a hybrid face-to-face and virtual event. On January 27 will also be held side events.

The Program It includes 6 plenary and 24 parallel sessions, which will focus on six key themes: (1) Strengthening migration data for follow-up and review of global agreements; (2) Strengthening of data on migrants in situations of vulnerability; (3) Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other shock events on data on migrants and migration; (4) New approaches, methodologies and innovations in migration data; (5) Strengthening of statistical capacities and financing; and (6) Data communication, visualization and public opinion.

In addition, during the Forum there will be a poster exhibition in the North Esplanade of ECLAC.
