Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero met with Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, at the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Bali, Indonesia.
The Argentine minister asked his peers for “a cessation of hostilities and the start of negotiations” emphasizing that “peace is urgent.” He reiterated that “Argentina is convinced that fair and lasting solutions can only be achieved through mutual commitments that ensure peaceful coexistence, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international and humanitarian law.”

In his meeting with Blinken, Cafiero warned about the global consequences that the conflict is generating and how the distorting effects on the world economy have a strong impact on the economies of Latin America. In this context, he asked NATO to commit to the negotiation and peace process in Ukraine.
The Argentine Foreign Minister also held a bilateral meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. In it, he sought to convey the position that Argentina has been holding since the beginning of the conflict: the rejection of the illegitimate use of force, the need to achieve a ceasefire and to resume dialogue between both parties to reach peace urgently.

The Argentine diplomat called for “building a multilateralism as an instrument of peace, a fair multilateralism that prevails where the market concentrates wealth and distributes poverty, and to practice a supportive multilateralism that embraces the discarded.”
In this context, Cafiero pointed out that “when there is a perception that multilateralism is inefficient, unilateral visions and actions are privileged, and these very often cause paralysis and tensions that have a negative and uneven impact on our societies.” And he added that the COVID-19 pandemic “revealed the difficulties of the international community in articulating a global response that guarantees equitable access to medical technologies and vaccines against the virus.”
This year’s G20 foreign ministers’ meeting has as its motto “Together build a more peaceful, stable and prosperous world”. It serves as a strategic forum to address global recovery efforts and seeks “strengthening multilateralism” and “ways to strengthen global collaboration and foster mutual trust among countries.”
