BRUSSELS, 9 Jan. (DPA/EP) –
The Belgian government and the electricity company Engie have reached an agreement to extend the operation of the Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear power plants for ten years to guarantee the supply of energy.
“With these decisions tomorrow, work can begin on the expansion of the two most modern nuclear power plants,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo explained at a press conference.
This expansion will serve to guarantee the country’s energy security for the next decade in a joint project between the State and the electric company Engie.
Brussels announced in March last year that Tihange 3 and Doel 4 would work until the end of 2035, pending negotiations on the application of this measure with Engie. The initial goal was to shut down Belgian nuclear power plants by 2025, but it was revised after the start of the war in Ukraine.
