July 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces, Shavendra Silva, has appealed to the population to support the work of the security forces.
Specifically, Silva has requested support “for the Armed Forces and the Police to guarantee that peace is maintained” in the country in the face of the current political upheaval.
The country’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, announced this Saturday his intention to resign from office next Wednesday, thus responding to the massive popular mobilizations and the request in this regard from the Sri Lankan political forces.
Previously, the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, had also resigned, after a day of peaceful demonstrations that culminated in the seizure of the official presidential residence in Colombo.
