Train crash leaves one dead and 41 injured in Mexico

At least one person died and 41 injured left the collision of two subway trains in the Mexican capital, authorities announced Saturday.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, indicated on her Twitter account that on Saturday morning there was a collision between trains on Metro Line 3, without specifying the causes that led to the incident.

Sheinbaum reported that one person died in the incident and that 16 were injured, although the capital’s Citizen Command and Contact Center later specified that the number of injured was 41. Four other people were trapped in the trains and have already been rescued. according to the mayor

The surroundings of the stations where the crash occurred were taken over by a hundred police and military personnel while ambulances and rescue teams arrived to attend to the injured.

Edgar Montiel, a 28-year-old electrician, was one of the train passengers who assured that he was miraculously saved by entering the penultimate car at the last moment and not the last one that was crushed in the crash.

“It was heard very loud. I just closed my eyes when I felt that the sheets of the wagon bent and threw me away,” Montiel told The Associated Press when recounting the moment in which the trains collided between the Potrero and La Raza stations on Metro Line 3 .

The electrician indicated that he was left on the floor of the car along with several passengers who were screaming and crying for help. “The power to the subway went out and a lot of smoke began to come out that was suffocating us, we couldn’t breathe well,” Montiel commented, adding that all the occupants of the car had to wait about thirty minutes until the paramedics arrived to help them. and get them out of the wagon. Montiel suffered injuries to his left arm and leg.

In May 2021, the collapse of an elevated section of the Mexico City subway left 26 dead and almost a hundred injured.
