The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Yoshimasa Hayashi, who made a working visit to Mexico.

During the meetingboth officials highlighted the importance of the relationship between Mexico and Japan, highlighting the celebration of 135 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, without any conflict.

In this sense, it was agreed to promote the Global Strategic Association, with a renewed impetus towards the future.

Regarding the strengthening of political dialogue, they agreed that the tenth meeting of Political Consultations be held this year in Mexico City, with the purpose of strengthening and updating cooperation schemes for the following decades.

At the end of the meeting, Foreign Minister Ebrard pointed out that “the relationship with Japan is a strategic and deep relationship due to history, culture and because today there are more than a thousand Japanese companies in Mexico, thousands of jobs.”

“We have a common future and what we want is to broaden it,” he stressed.

For his part, Minister Hayashi indicated that “Japan and Mexico are strategic global partners that share fundamental values ​​based on solid friendship and trust and have cooperated closely in the international arena.”

“I hope that the bridges of friendship between the two countries will be further strengthened in the future through academic exchange, cooperation in science and technology, and new cooperation in digital and green transformation,” he said.

Japan is a key trading partner for Mexico and the Agreement to Strengthen the Economic Association (in force since 2005) strengthens the economic relationship of both countries.

The coincidence of the two nations in the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TIPAT) represents important opportunities to increase commercial exchanges, as well as investments, in addition to favorably complementing the Agreement to Strengthen the Economic Association that has been signed with Japan.

Additionally, both foreign ministers exchanged points of view on various regional and global situations, agreeing to continue cooperating in multilateral mechanisms and forums in favor of common interests.

Japan is Mexico’s sixth largest trading partner worldwide and the third in Asia-Pacific. It is the fourth investor worldwide for Mexico. There are more than 1,300 Japanese companies established in the Latin American country. In addition, it is the third destination of Mexican agri-food exports in the world.
