Turkey lifts embargo on air freight transport with Armenia

6 Jan. () –

The Turkish authorities have announced this Friday that they have proceeded to lift the embargo on direct air transport of goods with Armenia in an attempt to pave the way to normalize relations.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vahan Hunanián, has confirmed the decision and has indicated that the Turkish side has notified the country’s authorities that “the embargo has been lifted this Friday.”

“We want to remember that this was included in one of the main agreements reached between the parties in July 2022 and we hope that the rest of the agreements will also be implemented,” he pointed out, according to information from the Armenpress news agency.

Likewise, he stressed that “Armenia will continue to support the negotiations with Turkey to establish diplomatic relations and achieve the reopening of the border between the two countries.”

Hours earlier, Turkish media reported the resumption of air trade between the two countries. The border between the two countries has been closed since 1993 following Ankara’s initiative and due to the conflict in Nagorno Karabagh.
