We have spoken on more than one occasion about the satellite communication capabilities that we find in the new iPhone 14, but this does not mean that this is the only terminal that is going to settle for it, as we also saw in a leak related to Samsung. Now, Qualcomm has launched at CES 2023 a new platform called Snapdragon Satellite.
Snapdragon Satellite offers global coverage from pole to pole, as long as we have direct vision of the sky, something that is not at all difficult to achieve if we find ourselves lost in a remote area, for example. This is in contrast to Apple’s system, which has large areas without coverage.
This connectivity system, for which Iridium will collaborate so that several next-generation Android terminals arrive with satellite connectivity during the second half of 2023, will allow communication with emergency services, just like on the iPhone, but it will also allow the sending of SMS and the use of messaging applicationssomething that is also offered to us for recreational use and not just for emergencies.
Snapdragon Satellite can also be expanded to other devices, such as laptops, tablets, vehicles and even IoT devices, so unlike what Apple did with its implementation, in this case it deals with the satellite connection as another way of communication, and not as an emergency system.
