Nvidia rebrands the defunct 12GB RTX 4080 as the RTX 4070 Ti, available starting at $799

The launch of the RTX range has been unnecessarily complicated. While the tech specs put Nvidia’s new cards at the top of the market, their scaling was a bit odd, if not gimmicky, and there’s no better proof of that than the demise of the 12GB RTX 4080. Criticism of the manufacturer for launching two cards with the same name but different features depending on the amount of memory were immediate and numerous, to the point that the company itself was forced to admit the error. A failure that he now wants to correct at CES 2023.

Just (re)announced, the new GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is nothing more than the “old” 12 GB RTX 4080 announced in September, but with a new name and more in line with the reality of the catalog. It will be a somewhat curious card, since unlike the rest, it will not have a Founders Edition version, leaving each manufacturer to release their own versions based on a reference design that they can adapt with more or less personalized cooling systems.

As we said, change the name, but not the specifications. Thus, the RTX 4070 Ti has 7,680 CUDA cores, a 2.31/2.61 GHz clock and a 285 W TGP. According to Nvidia, its performance is significantly higher than that of a 3090 Ti, with the difference that the latter not only performs less, but also has a much higher TGP (450 W). The new card should also consume much less during use (226 W in gaming mode compared to 398 W on the RTX 3090 Ti).

In the absence of knowing the prices for Europe, Nvidia points out that the RRP in the United States will be lower than initially announced, starting from $799. A significant reduction when you consider that when it was called the GeForce RTX 4080 it cost $1,099. Its launch will take place in the same month of January.
