July 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least 20 people have died and two have been injured on Thursday afternoon in a traffic accident on a road near the town of Taru, in Kwale County, southern Kenya.
At 6:00 p.m. (local time) a minibus heading to the city of Mombasa collided head-on with a trailer traveling in the opposite direction, police authorities have reported and the Kenyan newspaper ‘Standard Media’ has reported.
The bodies of the dead, including two children, have been transferred to the Kinango sub-county hospital morgue. The two injured people, meanwhile, are being treated at a Mariakani Sub county hospital.
Although the reason for the accident is still unclear, Kinango Police Chief Fredrick Ombaka has pointed out that the bus was overcrowded.
“The preliminary report of the incident indicates that this tragedy and senseless loss of life could have been avoided if the minibus driver had maintained discipline in the lane,” police said in a statement collected by KBC.
