The French authorities have referred this Tuesday to the recent end of the “interim government” of the opposition Juan Guaidó, affirming that it is not up to Paris to comment on these types of decisions made by the “democratic forces of Venezuela”, which are free to “organize themselves as they see fit”. “.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stressed in statements to Europa Press that the only way to resolve the deep crisis that Venezuela is going through is by holding “free, democratic presidential elections under international observation” in 2024.
“France supports the democratic forces of Venezuela that are organized as they wish. It is not up to us to comment on their decisions in this area,” they have settled from the Foreign Ministry.
In this sense, they have recalled the intervention of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, on November 11 at the Paris Peace Forum, from where he delved into the importance of acting in favor of the negotiation process that is taking place in Mexico between the Government of his counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, and the opposition.
Guaidó, who came to be recognized by more than fifty countries as “interim president” in 2019 after his self-proclamation after not recognizing the results of the 2018 presidential elections, has seen his political weight decrease to such an extent that most of the deputies of the National Assembly in 2015 voted at the end of December to end their “mandate”.
The opposition has argued its decision due to the lack of progress in terms of democracy and Human Rights under its “government”. For Guaidó it is a “leap into the void” that ultimately benefits a Maduro, who seems to be back on the international stage, as seen at the Climate Summit in Egypt.
