Journalist escapes unharmed from shooting attack in northern Mexico

A journalist in northern Mexico was unharmed after a gunman shot at the vehicle in which he was traveling with his family in the border state of Sonora, the first attempt on the life of a reporter in the country in 2023.

The attack occurred on Sunday, the first day of the year, after Mexico concluded 2022 with at least 15 journalists murderedthe largest number in three decades.

the digital diary The Press Note of sound reported that its director, Omar Castro, was attacked on a street in Ciudad Obregón. Castro was traveling with his daughter and a nephew when his truck was shot at. The vehicle carried a sign for La Nota Prensa de Sonora.

The assailant yelled at him that he was going to kill him, according to the outlet, which published photos of the van that was shot.

Nota Prensa de Sonora mainly broadcasts notes on local politics, as well as entertainment and other news.

Many of the journalists killed last year were small-town reporters running their own outlets on a meager budget. Others were contributors working for national publications in big cities like Tijuana.

On December 15, two gunmen on a motorcycle shot at the armored vehicle of famed television and radio journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva near his home in Mexico City. Gómez Leyva described the attack and posted photos of his vehicle on social media.
