The roscón de reyes is a delicacy that many of us love… or it should be a delicacy, since the quality varies a lot depending on where you buy it. For those who don’t know it, this is a round bun with a hole in the center. that has sugar, candied fruit and can be filled with cream, chocolate, etc.
In Spain it is always taken at Christmas, specifically the week of the Three Kings. During that week it is common to meet the family to make hot chocolate and accompany them with a piece of roscón de reyes.
That is where the preferences of each family come in.. There are those who prefer them with cream, others with truffles and some are more like roscón without filling (which are cheaper, by the way). But the filling is not a problem if we compare it with candied fruit, the issue that divides an entire country.
In what there is no discussion is in the study that the OCU (Organization of Consumers and Users) has done on white-label roscones in our country. Let’s see what they say and which are the best roscones in Spain.
Best roscones de reyes according to the OCU
A group of expert pastry chefs tasted all the roscones, assessing the quality of the filling and the bun dough, to see if they conformed to what was established. Among these packaged roscones there are products with a very good quality/price ratio, they explain in the OCU.
In their analysis they reveal that there are two products of good quality, and several of acceptable quality… but we also find roscones that are far from what a roscón de reyes filled with cream should be, so they seem to us a disappointing bet.
In the tasting, the roscón from El Corte Inglés stood out above the rest, something that is already common. The bun stands out for its texture and its mild citrus flavor, its cream filling stands out for its good quantity and its dairy flavor. This one got the best grade.
On the other hand, 3 of the 9 roscones do not exceed the minimum quality required: in one of the cases the problem is the use of alternative fillings to cream. In others, poor evaluations in the tasting test condition their final grade. The one from Mercadona occupies the third worst position.
