Space is shaping up to be the new business for tech companies

“Anticipation within business is key and although this issue seems distant, the reality is that we are already generating alliances and research so that we can manage data outside this orbit,” said Peter Marquez, head of Space Policy, at a press conference. on AWS.

The cloud company is looking for the data management required by companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic or Blue Origin to give them the opportunity to develop this new business vertical that could seem futuristic.

And as for the projects that are already working, it is the Mars Rover Perseverance, a mission that is focused on exploring the red planet and that collects information through the sensors that this vehicle has, to later process the data that is generated.

Another of the programs in which the company has been involved is the Brazilian Space Program, where through a cooperation agreement between the Amazon company and the Brazilian organization, long-term economic and technological development will be promoted through three areas:

  • An educational program to train talent on this topic
  • The creation of a spatial data repository where cloud technologies in space research will be analyzed.
  • The collaboration between the company and the agency to regulate space programs and space security.

In addition, thanks to this agreement, Brazil will be part of the Artemis Agreements, where the principles that guide cooperation on space exploration between countries are being generated.

Márquez also announced that they not only plan to put data centers out of space, but also that they can be located on other planets.

While AWS focuses its efforts on this topic, Microsoft Azure does the same from Querétaro, where it is already creating a platform to meet the challenges of the aerospace and innovation industry, making connectivity in the cloud and processes increasingly achievable in all sectors, such as industry, energy, telecommunications and public administration.

“We have space projects, we have worked with NASA to do some lunar mapping scenarios, or a trip to Mars where reconnaissance or virtual simulations of space flights are used with the use of Vision,” Francisco Corona, director of services, mentioned in an interview. in the Cloud and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft Mexico.

In addition, the company seeks to democratize innovation services in the Querétaro aerospace hub, where they work with students, developers and companies, focusing efforts on these space issues.

One of Azure’s best-known services is the development of new technologies with Orbital Loft, where solutions are being deployed on satellites, taking advantage of specialized hardware for this type of task by using virtualized terrestrial and orbiting environments.

On the other hand, inside the Cisco Live exhibition floor there was a small model of what will be NASA’s new massive deep space rocket, which is also part of the Artemis I mission, in which Amazon Alexa will participate as an experiment. .

The Webex voice assistant and video conferencing platform will be included on the flight into space, as part of a technology demonstration to see if these tools could benefit future astronauts flying to distant destinations like the Moon and Mars.

Amazon’s device will participate in the first stage of NASA’s mission to send the first woman and the first person of color to the Moon as part of a technology demonstration called Callisto.

“Callisto will demonstrate a first-of-its-kind technology that could be used in the future to enable astronauts to be more self-sufficient while exploring deep space,” said Lisa Callahan, vice president and general manager of Commercial Civil Space for Lockheed Martin. In addition to being part of a development that combines commercial use, with a vertical in full swing: space flights.
